The catastrophe that had happened earlier was on the news that night. Most of the family was sitting on the folded-up couch watching it in stunned silence. Sinbad and Shark were in the bath, and Sagebear was busy cleaning herself.
“So it was a dead woman falling from the ceiling that caused all that?” Harwood questioned the crime scene forming on the TV screen. “I guess that’s one way to ruin a party.”
“And she had four adopted kids!” Marc declared sadly. “Those poor little ones…”
As the newscast turned to who would take in the now orphaned children, Sagebear got up and sniffed toward the bathroom door. Lifting a paw up, she then scratched at it.
To her amazement, it opened a little bit. Clearly Shark or Sinbad didn’t close it as tightly as they thought.
The other four humans didn’t seem to notice her nosing herself into the bathroom. By that time, they’d turned the TV off and headed upstairs.
Deciding to take this chance, Sagebear nosed herself through the door and entered the steamy bathroom.
Shark looked a sight in the bathtub, barely even fitting into it. Sinbad just sat on the other end across from him, smirking amusedly.
It appeared that Shark was just as happy to be back as Sinbad was to have him back. Now both of them were taking a nice hot bubble bath.
Taking some of the suds in hand, Shark gently blew on them. He then giggled before turning himself around to let Sinbad wash his back.
Neither man knew that the door was open, or that Sagebear had snuck in and was watching them.
Sinbad groaned as he scrubbed Shark’s back clean, before rinsing him off and then holding him close.
Then, carefully, Sinbad leaned back with Shark, resting against the side of the bathtub. Both of them were contented where they were at, even with their skin beginning to prune.
Both of them were quite serene-looking, until they were confronted with a sudden splash of water.
“Ah! What…?!” Shark looked in front of him to see Sagebear in the tub with them now, floating in the water like a furry grey meatball.
Innocently, Sagebear swam up and licked Shark’s face. Shark and Sinbad were still relatively stunned at what just happened.
Then Sinbad snorted, and began to laugh raucously. A couple of seconds later, Shark joined in. He wrapped his arms around Sagebear and rubbed her back.
“Awww, we can’t be mad at you, doggy!” For the rest of their bathtime, Shark and Sinbad played with Sagebear until she couldn’t take any more.
She remained adoring even after jumping back out and shaking her wet fur, getting water everywhere.
Catarina was an absolute wreck after the media and police left. She threw the remains of her most valuable belongings about. Her husband simply kept away from her for fear of becoming a target.
“It’s those wretched rednecks!” She declared before flinging a broken vase against the wall. “They planted that corpse to humiliate me!”
Renauld tried to wave this absurd suggestion away. “I don’t believe they would do such a thing, dearest-”
“Oh, no?!” Taking offense that he wasn’t taking her side, Catarina put a hand on her chest. “These horrific events started the moment they arrived in this town! It must be their doing!”
Here Renauld cringed. “It could only be a coincidence…”
But Catarina kept ranting, shrieking about the injustices that were being experienced due to the ‘disgusting hillbillies’ that were currently staying in town.
All this time, Sebastian listened on to their conversation. He sighed sadly to himself, knowing this wasn’t the first time his mother blew something out of proportion and made false accusations.
“Hey, Denny?” It was apparent that Blaise couldn’t sleep quite yet. “Think maybe sometime tomorrow we should call Alma and Dudley?”
Dennis opened an eye, and nodded. “I have been worrying about the two of them…”
The entire time since the group reached Hidden Springs, they hadn’t gotten a call from either Dennis’ brother or Blaise’s best friend. This worried them immensely.
Laying back, Blaise pulled the sheet up over herself. “I’m sure it’s nothing. Those two can get pretty busy. Alma’s a teacher and writer, and Dudley’s a cop.”
“Yeah, they have lives of their own.” Dennis then rolled over onto his side. “But we’ll try and call them tomorrow.”
Feeling a bit more assured, Blaise closed her eyes and tried to sleep. Even then, she couldn’t help but feel like something wrong had happened in Twinbrook.
