Shark’s fever couldn’t break fast enough.
Ever since he got home from the hospital, he’d been reduced to writhing around and moaning in bed. The sneezing and coughing didn’t help matters either.
Soon, though, he was finally able to get up out of bed without hacking up any mucus or phlegm.
By this time, it had finally become December. With the start of the month came two things: even more snow and Lolly obsessing over the Winter Formal.
“Is my dress clean?! It needs to be spotless before and after this dance is finished!” She could be heard bossing her friends around in another room, clearly overcome with anticipation over the night’s events.
Shark didn’t blame her for being excited. He would have been too, had he gotten the chance to go when he was in high school. Instead, he had to go as a chaperone now, which he loathed.
Pulling out an old sweater and a pair of slacks, Shark then laid them out on the bed to see if they looked all right.
He then wondered what Sinbad was going to be wearing. Chances were that it wouldn’t be anything too formal, considering Sinbad.
The ride to the school became more agonizing with each teenager that was picked up. All of them wore either impossibly elaborate dresses, or very itchy suits.
Shark and Sinbad were forced to sit in the front of the limousine they were in, listening to the party-goers chatting away about how fun the night was going to be.
“Do we really have to do this?” Shark whispered to Sinbad. “I can’t imagine this being very easy for us.”
Sinbad’s response was quick and biting. “I’d rather be choking on a railroad spike than deal with these spoiled brats. Makes me wish I’d gotten a vasectomy the first chance I got.”
The last teenager attending soon entered the limo, resulting in them finally approaching the school afterward.
Right when the vehicle pulled up in front of the school, Shark and Sinbad were roughly pushed forward and out towards the front doors.
“All right, settle down!” Sinbad dug his heels in and stopped everyone from going any further. “Can you hormonal cumstains just settle the fuck down already?!”
He then turned to approach the school doors, only to find them inexplicably locked. While he was trying to yank them open, Shark walked over by his side.
“What’s going on? Are they frozen?” Looking over to the door Sinbad wasn’t pulling on, he got his answer. “Oh…Sinbad, you might want to look at this.”
Sinbad quit pulling on the handle, turning to look at a piece of paper taped to the opposite door. Ripping it off, he then began reading the words under his breath.
“We regret to inform you…due to illness, a recently discovered cocaine ring, and apathy towards teaching in general…”
The both of them were so engrossed in reading, they didn’t notice Lolly stomping up behind them and grabbing the paper out of Sinbad’s hands.
“Gimme that! Your literary comprehension is getting in the way of us having a great party and-”
Lolly scanned the note, and her face went while. She bunched the paper up in her hand, and stood there speechless.
“Um…Lolly?” Shark tried to take a step closer to his sister, but stopped when he saw the way her hand was shaking. He then went back to Sinbad when he saw her bare her teeth.
“Hoo boy,” Sinbad whispered to him. “Looks like the ol’ Lollybomb’s about to blow.”
Blow she did. Everyone surrounding her jumped back about a yard when Lolly let loose with a ghastly screech. The mascara she’d put on earlier began to run with angry tears.
“This isn’t fair!” She cried out. “I spent hundreds of dollars on this dress! I wanted to go dancing and spend time with all the cute boys! This is an outrage!”
As she ranted and raved, Sinbad and Shark began to back away from her. They were long gone by the time she threw herself onto the ground in a full-blown shriekfest.
Thankfully, the rest of the town was quiet. Not everyone was looking forward to a cloudy December night, it seemed.
Shark kept his gaze up towards the scenery as Sinbad led him through the park. He hardly even noticed the chill in the air, or how red his cheeks were.
All of the shops were well-decorated for the impending holiday. Even the street lights were decked out in a festive if not dangerous amount of blinking lights.
Near the fountain at the park’s center, Sinbad abruptly halted. It was so quick, Shark ended up slamming into his back.
“Why are we stopping?” To this, Sinbad put his hands on Shark’s shoulders, and looked him right in the eyes.
He looked determined to say what was on his mind. “Gotta ask you something, man; You cool with where we’re at?”
It took a little bit to understand what he was asking. Shark just stared for a moment before he could think of something to say.
“You mean, relationship-wise?”
Sinbad nodded. “I ain’t gonna lie, man. I’ve seen fucked-up things. I’ve done fucked-up things. Kind of surprised you haven’t run for the hills yet.”
He then pulled away, rubbing the back of his head. “I ain’t one for relationships, but for some reason you feel like it’s worth going through with it.”
Above them both, it began to snow again. The snowflakes began to fall gently around and on them. While Sinbad placed a hand on Shark’s cheek, it felt like being in a snow globe.
“So what do you say? Wanna go from ‘fuck buddy’ to ‘official boyfriend’?”
Now Shark was at a loss for words. His actions at that point involved a warm smile and nodding.
Then both of them stepped closer to each other, and entered into a warm, loving embrace.
-A few days later (Christmas morning)-
“Sure was nice of your old man to help us get this place,” Sinbad told Shark as they lay on the bed in the hotel room they were staying in.
“Yeah. He said it was basically going to be my Christmas present since, you know. My relatives.” He shuddered at the thought of what was happening at his place.
Sinbad didn’t need clarification there. “Hey, it beats my alternate plans to sit in my underwear and watch Christmas specials alone. Roommate decided to go spend the holidays with the girl across the street.”
He then sat back and let Shark snuggle up to him. Shark rested his head on Sinbad’s shoulder, and sighed contentedly.
“This might be the best Christmas I’ve ever had,” he purred while sidling up a little closer. “And I’m not just saying that because Bill isn’t around.”
“Well, glad I could help, man. Now, we gonna get nasty here, or in the bathroom?”
The suggestion made Shark give him a lurid smile. Leaning in close, the two kissed and held each other as they proceeded to start up their lovemaking again.
